Generative engine optimisation (GEO) describes work intended to make an organisation’s information useful and discoverable in generated answers. It overlaps with SEO and AEO. The label does not identify a separate ranking system or a guaranteed way to make an AI product recommend a business.
Understand the terminology
| Term | Common use |
|---|---|
| SEO | Improving discovery through search and the usefulness of the destination page. |
| AEO | Helping information answer relevant questions, including in generated answers. |
| GEO | Focusing on information used or cited by generative search and answer products. |
Agencies use these terms differently. Compare the actual scope, deliverables and reporting in a proposal. A different label does not make the same technical review, content edit or measurement exercise a separate service you necessarily need to buy.
What work belongs in a sensible programme?
- Make important service and evidence pages accessible and usable.
- Describe your organisation, offer, service area and contact routes consistently.
- Answer the decisions your audience needs to make using clear explanations and supported facts.
- Use structured data that matches the visible content where it is appropriate.
- Review relevant search performance and dated observations of generated answers.
What should you question?
Question claims of guaranteed citations, a fixed word count that every answer must follow, or a technical file that supposedly unlocks all AI systems. Google’s current guidance does not require special AI files or an ideal content length. The practical reason to improve a page is that it helps its audience and communicates something useful.
An example of useful scope
A healthcare practice might need clearer clinician profiles, reviewed treatment information, accurate practice locations and a reliable booking route. A charity might need better appeal information, transparent governance and an understandable donation journey. Those changes have a clear purpose even when no AI product cites the page. They are examples of work to consider, not reported results.
Measure without overstating attribution
Keep separate records for impressions, clicks, observed citations and enquiries. Google Search Console can supply search data; a dated answer sample records what a product showed for a particular question. Neither alone proves a sale was caused by an AI answer. Compare equivalent periods and record other changes that could affect demand.
