# What is answer engineoptimisation?

Answer engine optimisation (AEO) describes work intended to help people discover a business through generated answers. It overlaps with SEO and GEO: clear services, accessible pages, reliable information and useful evidence remain the foundation. Visibility can be observed, but a particular AI citation cannot be guaranteed.

## When does AEO deserve your attention?

Start with how customers make decisions. A charity supporter might compare donation platforms; a practice manager might ask which website features help patients enquire. If generated answers play a part in that journey, reviewing the information they draw on is useful.

That review should lead to specific work. A missing practice address, a confusing donation journey or an unexplained service is a more actionable finding than “you need more AI content”. Before adding pages, establish whether people can find, understand and act on the pages you already have.

## What does AEO mean in practice?

The term covers work intended to improve how an organisation appears in answer experiences: explaining services clearly, resolving access problems, publishing useful evidence and checking the sources shown in generated responses. We use it to describe a focus within a broader search programme.

For example, a consultant’s page could explain the consultation process, verified practice locations and booking options, with clinical information reviewed by the practice. That is useful to a prospective patient whether they arrive through a conventional search result, an AI answer or a recommendation.

## How do SEO, AEO and GEO fit together?

| Term | Common focus | Practical work |
| --- | --- | --- |
| SEO | Discovery through search | Indexing, relevant pages, clear navigation and useful content. |
| AEO | Visibility within answers | Understand buyer questions, improve supporting information and record answer observations. |
| GEO | Visibility within generated answers | Often the same work as AEO, with attention to generative search experiences. |

These labels do not define a universal technical standard. Google describes optimisation for its generative features as SEO and says existing Search foundations remain relevant. Read Google’s AI optimisation guide.

## Check the right crawler controls

Search access and permission to collect potential training data are different decisions. Explicitly naming every bot in robots.txt is unnecessary when the applicable policy already permits the requested URL. A named group can also override the wildcard group, so inspect the rule that actually applies.

| Agent or control | Purpose to consider |
| --- | --- |
| Googlebot | Google Search crawling, including the underlying access used for Search AI features. |
| Google-Extended | A separate Google AI product control; it does not determine inclusion in Google Search. |
| OAI-SearchBot | OpenAI’s search crawler. |
| GPTBot | OpenAI’s crawler for potential model-training material. |
| PerplexityBot | Perplexity’s search crawler, distinct from its user-initiated fetching agent. |

## A practical starting point

- Choose the journey. Identify a specific audience and useful next action, such as a charity requesting a website proposal.
- Check the page. Review indexing directives, headings, service details, mobile layout and the contact route. Fix inaccurate information and broken actions first.
- Add evidence. Explain a relevant project, the decisions taken and what can be verified. Distinguish delivery facts from traffic, enquiry or revenue results.
- Connect related information. Link the service page to pricing, suitable work and a guide that resolves a genuine question. Each page should have a clear purpose.
- Record and review. Save the baseline, note substantive changes and inspect the same journeys again after release.

## When is doing it yourself enough?

A small site can often begin with Search Console, a page inventory and manual testing. Use a spreadsheet to record the page, intended audience, unanswered questions, evidence needed and next action. Our free page diagnostic can help identify observable issues, and our manual AI visibility checker helps prepare prompts. These tools earn us no commission.

Specialist help becomes more useful when the work involves a migration, multiple systems, substantial content overlap or measurement across several services. Ask for a proposed scope and examples of deliverables. Compare that with your team’s capacity and the cost of ongoing support.

## Measure visibility and business outcomes separately

Google’s Generative AI performance report provides a view of appearance in its generative Search experiences. Read it alongside standard Search performance and your own enquiry records. An impression is evidence of visibility, not evidence that a visitor became a customer. Google’s report announcement.

For manual checks, record the exact prompt, engine, date, country, sign-in state, answer and cited URLs. Repeat the same prompt set and preserve the source evidence. Note whether an answer mentions your business, cites your site, both or neither. Results vary; a small sample should not be presented as total market share.

For the business result, distinguish submitted enquiries, qualified opportunities and won work. Where traffic is too low for a useful comparison, say so. A rise after an update can justify further investigation, but it does not by itself establish what caused the change. Our public prompt panel explains the observation method.

## What should you avoid?

Do not add pages simply to hit a publishing quota, rewrite every heading as a question or stretch an answer to an arbitrary length. Google says special AI files and fixed content chunks are not requirements for its generative Search features. Retain optional machine-readable exports only where they serve a real integration.

Useful FAQs can remain part of a page. However, Google retired FAQ rich results on 7 May 2026; markup should not be sold as a route to that retired feature or a guaranteed AI citation. Google’s documentation updates.

Our approach is to make the website more useful and the evidence more accountable. If an agency promises a particular AI answer, ask how it can control a system it does not own. Then ask what observable work and reporting you will actually receive.

## Common AEO questions

**Does AEO replace SEO?**

No. For Google, generative search uses the underlying Search systems. AEO and GEO are industry terms for overlapping work, not separate entry requirements or paid routes into AI Overviews.

**Will FAQ schema get my site into AI Overviews?**

No. Google retired FAQ rich results in May 2026. Useful questions and answers can still help readers, but FAQ markup is not an AI citation guarantee.

**Does blocking GPTBot block ChatGPT Search?**

OpenAI distinguishes GPTBot, used for potential training data, from OAI-SearchBot, used for search. Review the current crawler documentation and configure those choices separately.

**How long does it take to see results?**

There is no dependable timetable for a particular generated answer. Technical fixes, recrawling, competition and changing search systems all affect what is observed. Agree review dates and business measures instead of a guaranteed citation deadline.

**Can I start without paying for a tool?**

Yes. Review Search Console, test your main pages and keep a dated record of a small set of representative prompts. Our free tools can help organise the checks; they cannot establish the quality of every page or predict rankings.
